We live within the Manistee National Forest in northern Michigan. We heat only with wood in a house built in 1890. We get firewood permits from the forestry service for $20 which allows you 4 full cords.(per $20 permit)I have found 90%+ people who cut in the forest will not take the smaller rounds and have left them for years. I can go through the easy to reach parts of the forest and cut well seasoned small rounds to add to our cord wood. I can do about 4 truckloads in 1/2 day.....well worth the trip!
