Wood Stove Tools - what's the deal?

Wood stove tools? I know what you're thinking, why not just use my fireplace tools for running my brand new wood stove? Well, the truth is that you can go ahead and do that. I don't recommend it, but I'm sure you'll get by. Wood stoves are by nature, smaller than fireplaces. The fireboxes are significantly smaller and therefore, big long fireplace tools are difficult to maneuver effectively. Using a large fireplace poker inside of a wood stove is like driving a dump truck down a bicycle path, it's overkill to the point of it being ineffective and potentially dangerous.

In addition to the size difference, wood stove sets should be more rugged than their fireplace counterparts. A lot of the fireplace tool sets are decorative and not all of them are built sturdy. This is generally okay for the fireplace as it is not used on a daily basis like the wood stove in the colder months. For its frequent use, the wood stove demands rugged tools that will withstand the day-to-day rigors of use.

What should be included in a tool set?

Tool sets for the wood stove should include at least these four items:

  • Poker
  • Shovel
  • Broom
  • Rake
  • Also, make sure to buy a set that has short handles (usually around 18" or less) that will work well for a wood stove.
