Tree Length Firewood

by Greg
(Maine)

I have 10 cords of tree length wood that I cut one year ago. If I cut it to length and split it, is it considered seasoned wood?

Thanks, Greg

Answer

Tree length wood will season out to a degree, but not to the extent that it will be fully seasoned and ready for the fireplace, especially not in a single year. It is likely that the ends of the logs are pretty well seasoned, but the middle still has a long way to go.

It's important to cut, split and properly store your firewood to get it fully seasoned. If you process it now and store it properly, you'll have seasoned firewood for next fall.

Good luck!
