firewood for a fire ring

by Annette
(Tucson, AZ)

I want the best, safest suggestion for wood choice in a outdoor fire ring(camp fire). Locally available wood options are mesquite, pine, some oak and pecan. Wanting to know which wood options sparks the least and burns the best for the money.

Thanks...great site for information!

Answer

Annette,

When it comes to firewood, unless you are cutting it yourself, you usually get what you pay for. Of the species that you listed, pine is the least desirable but is also likely to be the least expensive. Pine will not burn as long as oak, mesquite and pecan.

In terms of popping and throwing sparks, pine is the only species listed that will do much of that. With that being said, I really don't think it's a major concern as long as you have your fire ring in a safe area that isn't at risk for a fire spreading.

I hope this helps!

You better at first decide what you really need, safe fire without sparkling long firing or cheaper. Than choose the kind of tree.
